MOVIE REVIEW

TITLE: Zero Days

DESCRIPTION: 2016 documentary about the Stuxnet malware virus.

WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY: Alex Gibney (Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief)

STUDIO: Magnolia Pictures

MY TAKE: I thought it was interesting. We made this virus to go after Iran's nuclear program, but it backfired on us because it spread everywhere and it opened the door for enemies like Iran, North Korea, Russia and China and to attack us. The dirty little secret is that we're extremely vulnerable to a cyber attack. It really wouldn't take much to knock out power to half the country or to shut down all of the ATMs. Do we really think everyone would remain calm? Fuck no. The cities would erupt in riots while the rural areas would get taken over by militias.

NOTES:

  • Won a Peabody.
  • Features interviews with Russian anti-virus expert Eugene Kapersky, former NSA Director Michael Hayden, former counter-terrorism czar Richard Clarke and a number of American and Israeli spies among others.
